Walter (Jack) Filler
Mar. 5, 1939 ~ Mar. 20, 2023
Walter Jackson "Jack" Filler, of Valley Mills, Texas was a beloved son, father, husband, grandfather, and friend during his 84 years of life. He was born on the 5th of March 1939, in Fort Worth, Texas and grew up in Odessa, Texas with his parents, Violet and Arthur Filler. Jack passed away peacefully on the 20th of March 2023.
After graduating from Odessa High School, he went on to New Mexico A&M University and then Texas Christian University, where he played the trombone in the marching band. Jack graduated from TCU in 1963, a Horned Frog for life with a Bachelor of Arts in Biology and an enduring love for playing music on a multitude of instruments.
Upon graduation, Jack entered Officers Training School for the United States Airforce. As a Commander in the Explosive Ordinance Disposal division who served in Viet Nam, Jack's honorable military service spanned multiple continents. In the mid-1960s, Jack met Pamela Alsup. They married in 1972 at the First Baptist Church of Valley Mills and carried their love across the world, visiting countless countries while living in Incirlik, Turkey and Spangdahlem, Germany. Jack and Pam had two, dearly beloved children, Rachael Delaney and Arthur "Chip" Filler. Jack's family were his greatest pride, and being Jenni Pearson-Delaney's Grandpa was his utmost joy.
In 1983, Jack retired from the Air Force decorated with the Air Force Commendation Medal for exceptional leadership and meritorious accomplishment, culminating a distinguished career in the service of his country. He and his family eventually settled in Valley Mills, Texas, and Jack began a second career at Allergan in Waco, where he made many friends. Upon retiring from Allergan, Jack kept himself busy taking part time jobs—not for the money, but for the relationships. He loved being around people.
In his later years, Jack married Alice Eskew of Valley Mills. They enjoyed regular walks, puzzles, games of dominoes with friends, and memorable cruise vacations to the Caribbean together. Jack liked getting out early to meet his friends for coffee and traveling around Texas meeting new people and visiting old friends.
Jack was preceded in death by his father Arthur Lee Filler, mother Violet P. Filler, and wife Pamela Kaye Filler. He is survived by his wife, Alice Fay Filler of Valley Mills, TX, daughter Rachael Merideth Delaney and husband James Patrick Delaney of Valley Mills, TX, son Arthur Lee Filler II and partner Genevieve Nicole James of Valley Mills, TX, and granddaughter Jennifer Denali Pearson-Delaney of Austin, TX.
A Military graveside service for retired Air Force officer Captain Walter Jackson Filler will be held at 11 A.M. Saturday, April 1, 2023, at the Valley Mills Cemetery.
Visitation will be 5 - 7 P.M. Friday, March 31st at Foss Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Valley Mills.
Jack will always be remembered for his endless generosity, his witty humor, and his musical soul. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that we honor Jack's lifelong spirit of generosity and his love of music by making donations in his name to the Texas Music Project, https://texasmusicproject.org .
