Velma Irene Smith Mathews, age 80, of Valley Mills went to be with her Lord and Savior on February 13, 2020. Funeral service will be 2:00PM on Monday, Feb. 17, 2020, at First Baptist Church of Valley Mills with Pastor John Wheatley officiating under the direction of Foss Funeral Home and Cremation Center.
Visitation will be 4 - 6 P.M. Sunday at Foss Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the charity of your choice.
Velma was born on April 20, 1939 in Port Arthur, TX to Luther Thompson Smith and Libby Asilee Snodgrass Smith. She was saved and baptized at the age of 12 in Memphis, TN. She married James Walter Mathews on October 11, 1958 and together they raised five children. She was the coach of many North Orange Bobby Sox softball teams with numerous championships. The players on her teams looked up to her and respected her very much and she is still in contact with many of them to this day. She was a self-taught musician learning to play the piano, guitar and fiddle and one of her favorite songs to play on the guitar and sing was You Are My Sunshine. She loved to sing in the choir at church and had a beautiful voice. She had a big heart and was always there to help a family member or friend in time of need. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Clifton, TX. She was preceded in death by her parents, a son James Luther Mathews, a granddaughter Jessica Dawn McCormick and a great-grandson Seth McCormick.
She is survived by James Walter Mathews the father of her children, sisters Mary Rushing and Mildred Morse, daughters Colleen (Craig) McCormick, Marcia (Lori) Mathews, Tonia (Joe) Gonzales, sons Gary (Lea Ann) Mathews and Jim (Cheryl) Mathews. She is also survived by grandchildren Jeremy (Tina) McCormick, Josh (Jessica) McCormick, Taylor Goodall, Tiffany (Rick) Wegmann, Brandon Mathews, Cody (Celina) Mathews, Derek Mathews, Christopher Jenkins, Chrystal Martin, Jimbo (Marckie) Mathews, Adam (Brittney) Mathews, Steven (Meagan) Mathews, Dylan (Leeza) Mathews, Justin Evans, Nate (Ashley) Gonzales. Her great-grandchildren are Jake and Drew McCormick, Ember Mathews, Caiden Mathews, Kayson and Jaxon Mathews, JW and Jane Mathews, Alyssa and Shawn Barnett and Abi Azlin. Velma leaves behind nieces, nephews, cousins and numerous friends.
