Memorials may be made to the Valley Mills First Baptist Church #Nancy Lee Hardwick Burch was born on May 28, 1926 in Abilene, Texas. She was welcomed into the family of Chester and Era Mae Perkins Hardwick by her older sister, Dorothy Jean. Her younger sister, Sarah Lou, completed the family two years later. Nancy attended Valley Mills High School where she was a straight A student. Nancy met Homer Louis (Red) Burch and they married in 1950. They lived in various cities in Texas, moving with Red's work with the Santa Fe Railroad. Their son, James Douglas (Doug) Burch was born during this time. Nancy became a military wife after Red reenlisted. She moved to Okinawa, Japan with 3 year old Doug to join Red in 1954. Their daughter, Nancy Gayle (Kate) Burch, was born during their stay in Japan. After moving from post to post the family decided to set down roots back in Valley Mills, building a home there. Nancy worked and raised their children with support from her parents who also lived there, while Red continued to move around the world as he was posted. Nancy found work that she loved and a community of workers that were extended family at the First National Bank in Valley Mills where she worked until she retired. She even went back for the fellowship time and work once a month to file statements. Nancy was an accomplished seamstress. She made all of Kate's clothes when she was growing up. She and Kate would look at something in a shop window and Nancy would sketch it and then go home and make it. She translated this talent into quilt-making later in her life and made gorgeous quilts that her family has to treasure forever. Nancy loved being a grandmother. She was extremely proud of her four grandchildren, Joshua Burch, 28, and Zachary Burch, 24, of Los Angeles, and Zoe Belle, 19, and Annie Jules, 20, of Chicago. She was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Valley Mills for as long as she was able. She particularly loved being part of the prayer ministry and reading scripture in church. Nancy moved into the Heckmann Residence of the Sunset Lutheran Home in Clifton, Texas in January 2009. As she moved through the various levels of care in the residences there, she received exceptional, loving attention from all of the staff for which the family is extremely grateful. Survivors include her daughter: Nancy Gayle (Kate) Burch and her husband Phillip Lanier of Illinois; a son: James Douglas Burch and wife Sherry of California; 2 sisters Sarah Bickerstaff of Tennessee, Dorothy Gaskie of Junction, Texas, 4 grandchildren: Annie Jules Lanier, Zoe Belle Lanier, Joshua Burch, and Zachary Burch.
