Mamie Frances
Johnston
September 27, 1939 – August 7, 2024
· Mamie Frances Cook Johnston
Date of Birth: September 27, 1939
Date of Passing: August 7, 2024
It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Mamie Frances Cook Johnston, age 84, who went to be with her Savior on August 7, 2024. She was born on September 27, 1939, in Axtell, Texas, to Edna Earl Wallace Cook and Clinton Theodore Cook. Mamie was married to the love of her life, Clayton Carl Johnston, for over 64 wonderful years.
Mamie is survived by her husband, Clayton; her sons, Craig Carlton Johnston and his wife Gloria of Hewitt, and Shannon Carl Johnston and his wife Jenny of Shreveport; her beloved grandchildren, Allie Brooke Johnston, Kate Carly Johnston, and Clayton Craig Johnston; as well as her siblings, Zelda Ree Thomas, Daniel Grover Cook, and Wilbur Lee Cook. She also leaves behind her sister-in-laws, and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews to cherish their memories together. She was preceded in death by her parents, Edna and Clinton, and her siblings, Dora Cook Litton, Clinton Elwood Cook, Nelda Lee Cook and Kenneth Earl Cook.
Mamie grew up in Lorena, Texas, with her seven siblings and graduated from Lorena High School in 1957. During her time in high school, she was a proud majorette and a basketball player. In 1962, Mamie graduated from Baylor University with a degree in Accounting, a path inspired by her work as a typist for an accountant, Mr. Denison. Mamie remained forever grateful to Mr. Denison for guiding her first steps to becoming a CPA and growing her love for the work.
Mamie and Clayton's love story began through a mutual connection, and they were married on June 30, 1960, fulfilling Mamie's dream of being a June bride. The couple moved to Houston for Clayton to complete his college degree, and after his graduation, they settled in Lake Jackson, Texas, where they raised their family and built a life together for over 26 years. In Lake Jackson, they made lifelong friends, raised their two sons, and were dedicated members of First Baptist Church Lake Jackson.
In 1979, Mamie and Clayton found a beautiful, bluebonnet-filled 100-acre plot in Crawford, Texas, which they knew was meant to be theirs. The farm became a cherished family retreat, where countless memories were made with their boys throughout their childhoods. After retirement, Mamie and Clayton made the farm their permanent home, where they often hosted friends and family, and where Mamie spent the rest of her days.
In her later years, Mamie remained a devoted and loving wife to Clayton, and found joy in her new role as "Grams" to her grandchildren. Her time spent with them was some of the happiest of her life, always in attendance to cheer them on in every sport, performance, concert or big life moments.
Mamie was intentional with her time, always finding ways to love and serve those around her — whether through cooking, phone conversations, leading Bible Study Fellowship groups, or volunteering at her church. She was a faithful servant of the Lord, actively working as a Sunday School teacher, VBS leader, Children's Ministry volunteer, and singing in the choir at First Baptist Valley Mills. Her beautiful voice was a gift she used to praise Jesus all her days.
While we are deeply saddened by her passing, we find comfort in knowing this is not the end. Mamie was a wholly devoted follower of Jesus and is now rejoicing with Him in Heaven for eternity.
Our family invites you to a visitation on Thursday, August 15 from 5:00 PM-7:00 PM at First Baptist Church Valley Mills.
You are also welcome to attend graveside service will be held on August 16 at 9:00 AM at Riesel Cemetery, followed by a celebration of life at First Baptist Church Valley Mills at 1:00 PM.

"All flesh is as grass,
And all the glory of man as the flower of the grass.
The grass withers,
And its flower falls away,
But the word of the Lord endures forever."
