Jerry Wayne Smith, age 75, of Valley Mills, Texas, passed away Wednesday, January 25, at Providence Hospital in Waco. Funeral services will be 10 A.M. Monday at the Valley Mills First Baptist Church with Dr. John Wheatley officiating. Interment will follow at the Valley Mills Cemetery under the direction of Foss Funeral Home and Cremation Center.
Visitation will be 2 - 4 P.M. Sunday, at the First Baptist Church. Memorials may be made to the Valley Mills Fire Department.
Jerry was born on October 31, 1947, in Clifton, Texas, to Cortez and Clara Mae (Weir) Smith. Jerry first met Debbie Holley at a rodeo in Crowley. They were later married on Sept. 1, 1967, at the First Baptist Church in Crowley. Jerry worked with the 4-H Youth Support Group and the Valley Mills Fire Department where he was not only a member but worked every year to help raise money for the organization. Jerry showed cattle and was very active with the Youth Fair and the Valley Mills Tractor Pull. He also owned Smith Feed and later the Valley Mills Livery Stable Auction Barn on Friday nights where he auctioned and sold barbecue for 18 years. Jerry was President of the Autistic Society for many years and a member of the Texas Farm Bureau. Jerry was county commissioner for Bosque County for 8 years. Jerry and his wife Debbie supported many other civic organizations for Valley Mills. Living on the family ranch along the Bosque River near Valley Mills was where they were most happy with their 2 boys.
Survivors include his 2 sons: Kevin Bryan Smith and Kyle Wayne Smith; 2 grandchildren: Garrett Cortez Smith and Seely Paige Smith; many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Pallbearers are Chance Smith, Keith Allen, Chris Hillin, Robbie Clark, Justin Owens, and David McAdams. Honorary Pallbearers are Steve Smith, Bill Allred, Mike Smith and Mike Trollinger.
