Jean Rivers (McNeill) Johnson, age 88, of Mesquite, Texas, passed away on February 1, 2017, Dallas Regional Medical Center. Graveside services will be held Saturday, March 4, 2017, at the Valley Mills Cemetery under the direction of Foss Funeral Home and Cremation Center.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Alzheimer's Association.
Jean was born on January 18, 1929, in Valley Mills, Texas to Edwin and Maude Rivers (Hearon) McNeill. Her father Edwin and his brother John McNeill ran the McNeill Drug Store on the main street in Valley Mills for many years after the retirement of their father Alec McNeill who founded the drug store. She was also a descendant of the Booth family that founded Valley Mills.
Jean was a graduate of Lubbock High School in 1946 and from the University of Texas at Austin in 1950 and graduated Phi Beta Kappa from U of Texas. She was a member of Chi Omega sorority. She worked as a teacher, secretary, and pursued her interest in archaeology and astronomy in her spare time. She married John Burchell Johnson on August 28, 1956. He preceded her in death in 2009. They had 2 daughters Amy Johnson Wheeler and Valerie Johnson.
She is survived by 2 daughters ands 3 grandchildren: Sarah Wheeler, Hannah Wheeler and Emmie Johnson-Cobb; her sister and brother-in-law: Luanne McNeill Thornton and W. G. Thornton.
