Jack Alton Roberson of Laguna Park, Lake Whitney area died September 2, 2016 in Waco, Texas. Services will be Monday September 5, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. at First Baptist Church Valley Mills with John Wheatly officiating. Burial will follow at Valley Mills cemetery under the direction of Foss Funeral Home and Cremation Center.
Visitation will be 4 - 6 P.M. Sunday at the Valley Mills First Baptist Church. Memorials may be made to the Valley Mills First Baptist Church or to Providence Hospice.
Mr. Roberson was born November 12, 1935 in Bosque County to Austin Lee and Robert Lillian (Pool) Roberson. He was baptized into the Baptist church in 1946. After graduating from Valley Mills High School in 1954, he enlisted in the U. S. Army in 1955. He was stationed in Germany. While there he attended NCO school in Munich, Germany and played football for the 12th Group Rams in Kaiserslautern, Germany. He attended and played football at Navarro Jr. College in Corsicana where he was selected Most Valuable Player and All Conference Running Back. This is where he met and married Darla Davis. Jack graduated with a B.S. Degree from Howard Payne University in Brownwood in 1960 and started his 30 year coaching career in Irving, then Valley Mills, Anson, and retiring from McGregor schools. While Head Coach and Athletic Director in Valley Mills, he lead his football team to 5 District Championships, 2 Quarter Final appearances and 1 State Semi-Finalist appearance. In McGregor, as Assistant Coach under Rudy Phillips and Butch Williams, Coach Roberson enjoyed being a part of one of the winningest high school football programs in the state of Texas, which included 8 district championships and 2 state finalist appearances. As head track coach at McGregor, he lead the Bulldogs to multiple district championships along with numerous trips to the state finals in Austin. One of the greatest highlights of his career was being able to coach his own children in multiple sports. He enjoyed the opportunity to work with many central Texas youth.
Mr. Roberson was ordained as a Deacon at Lake Whitney Baptist Church. Later, he was a member of the First Baptist Church Valley Mills where he taught children's Sunday school and served on several committees.
Coach Roberson was preceded in death by his parents, one daughter Becky Lynn, two brothers Doyle Lee and Bobby George, and one sister Opal Ruth Walker.
Coach Roberson is survived by his wife Darla, two sons Alan and wife Terry of Fort Worth, Dan and wife Dana of Frankston, a daughter Cindy and husband Tim Chadwick of Kansas City, a sister Lillian Belle Barnett and 6 grandchildren, Katy, Whitney, Karly, Jay, Shelbi, and Jack along with a number of nieces, nephews and cousins.
