Florence Verdel Carey, age 94, of Valley Mills passed away Tuesday, Jan. 10, 2012, in a local nursing home. Funeral service will be 11 A.M. Saturday, January 14th at the Valley Mills First Baptist Church under the direction of Foss Funeral Home. Visitation will be 10 - 11 A.M. Saturday at the church. Verdel was born May 13, 1917, in Valley Mills, Texas. She was the daughter of Alph and Delia Dee Dee(Reed) Sadler. Verdel was the youngest of 5 children. She was a licensed beautician and a member of Mt. Carmel Baptist Church where she was the pianist and church secretary for many years. She married Melvin Carey on May 7, 1940, in Meridian, Texas. He preceded her in death in 1991. She had worked many years at nursing homes in Clifton and in Valley Mills. Besides being a local historian, she loved taking care of the sick and shut-ins. She was also preceded in death by her siblings: Oliver Sadler, Amos Sadler, Rose Mary Sadler Jones, and Cleo Sadler. Survivors include her nieces: Rose Marie Graves and Wanda M. James and husband Harry; great nephew and grandson: Allen B. Graves and wife Eveleen; great niece: Constance Sadler; a host of family and friends. Pallbearers are: Cedric Sadler, DeMarqus James, Robert Gene Southern, Richard Johnson, Ronald Johnson, Laurice Sadler. Charles Hopkins
