Don Simpson

Don Carroll Simpson, of Valley Mills, Texas, passed away peacefully January 17, 2024, at the age of 90.  Graveside service will be at 1 P.M., Tuesday, January 23, 2024, at Proffitt Cemetery near Newcastle, Texas.  Visitation will be 4- 6 P.M., Sunday at Foss Funeral Home and Cremation Center.

Don was born December 13, 1933 on the banks of Hog Creek near Valley Mills, Texas to Willie Simpson and Minta Marie Holt Simpson.   Don joined the Patton Church in 1944, at age 11.  He graduated from Valley Mills High School in 1952.   Don had a passion for football that started when he was on the Valley Mills Eagles 1948-1952.   While playing football at Valley Mills they were rated by Texas High School all time Wins 33 consecutive (1950-1952) tied for 19 currently;  all time District Wins Valley Mills is 40th currently  41 consecutive wins (1946-1953).   His love continued with watching and coaching his kids and grandkids in all sports throughout the years.

After working for the Santa Fe Railroad for a while, he joined the Air Force and served four years with the 95th Bomb Wing, Eighth Air Force, as an airplane mechanic.

In 1958, he enrolled at Tarleton State College where he met the love of his life, Patsy Nell Creel.  They were married July 9, 1960 and had two children, Deborah Lee and Steven Bret, who both were his pride and joy.

Don and Pat bought a farm on Hog Creek near where he was born and they raised hay and cattle there.  Don worked hard to get the farm cleaned up and grass established.  He was chosen Conservation Farmer of the Year for McLennan County in 1977.  Don believed the land should be left in better shape than when you found it.

Don was proceeded in death by his parents, Willie and Minta Simpson.  Three brothers, Billy Durwood, Adrian Darnell and Leo Gene.  He leaves behind his wife, Pat; son, Steve; daughter, Debbie Meurer and her husband, Anthony; Three grandchildren, Jerod Meurer and wife, Tyler, their children,  Caiden, Brighton, and Brexley (Don's great-grandkids), Dalton Muerer; Jolee Meurer Pustejovsky and husband, Derek.
