Celeste Mattlage
June 25, 1929 -- May 15, 2018
Celeste Mattlage, formerly of Crawford TX and current resident of Laguna Park, TX walked in to the arms of the Lord on Tuesday, May, 15, 2018. Funeral service will be 11 A.M. Saturday, May 19, 2018, at Canaan Baptist Church. Interment will be at the Canaan Baptist Church Cemetery under the direction of Foss Funeral Home and Cremation Center.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 P.M. Friday, May 18, 2018, at Foss Funeral Home. Memorials can be made to Canaan Baptist Cemetery Association, c/o Donna Grimestad, Box 664, Hewitt, TX 76643.
Celeste was born June 25, 1929 in Oxford, MS to Charles Wesley Nicholas and Eutha Celeste Samson. The last to arrive in a set of fraternal twins with brother Wesley, the twins were welcomed home by older sister Ophelia. Celeste grew up in the Union West Community were she married Charles Martin in 1947, and from this marriage two children were born. Charles Fredrick Martin and Sharon Marie. In 1952 the family moved to Cranfills Gap, TX, and later to Clifton where Celeste, known to many as Polly, worked for many years as floor lady at Walls Manufacturing. She also worked tediously at night in front of her sewing machine to provide so many people with custom made rodeo riding outfits. In October of 1970, she married Marvin Mattlage and moved to Crawford and then a few short years later to the Mattlage Family Farm in the community of Prairie Chapel. Shortly thereafter, she retired from Walls Manufacturing and joined her husband working on the farm, maintaining a larger garden, and beautiful flower beds surrounding the home they built together. Celeste continued sewing until she couldn't physically sit at a sewing machine. She has made everything from pillow cases with matching doll dresses for children's charities to bridesmaid dress and countless outfits for her family, friends, and even strangers. Celeste was also involved in serving the Lord through her service at Canaan Baptist Church. She served as church clerk, Sunday school teacher, and also provided the floral arrangements for church services.
Celeste was proceeded in her death by here parents, older sister Ophelia Madden, husband, Marvin Mattlage, and beloved son, Freddie Martin.
Those left behind to cherish her memory include daughter, Sharon White & husband Keith of Laguna Park, grandson Michael Dorsey and wife Jackie of Gatesville, granddaughter Lisa Dorsey-Dromgoole of Laguna Park, and great-granddaughter Senior Airman Sydney Dorsey, of Biele AFB in California, twin brother Reverend Wesley Nicholas of Oxford, MS, and numerous nieces, nephews, and their families.
