Archie Watley Sr.

Archie Wayne Watley Sr., age 70, of McGregor, Texas, passed away August 4, 2017, at St. Catherine's surrounded by family. Funeral services will be 1 P.M. Wednesday, August 9, 2017, at the First United Methodist Church in Clifton, Texas. Interment will follow at Oswall Cemetery with full military honors under the direction of Foss Funeral Home and Cremation Center.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 P.M. Tuesday, August 8th at Foss Funeral Home in Valley Mills.
Archie was born on March 7, 1947, in Clifton, Texas, to Rev. Archie B. and Amanda (Wright) Watley. Archie professed a hope in Christ at an early age. He was a very active member in the Clifton Cumberland Presbyterian Church in America. He served as Sunday school teacher, Sunday School Superintendent, Vacation Bible School Coordinator, Church Elder, Church Treasurer, Church Program Chairman and in the church choir. He led many inspirational songs. Archie also served in offices on the local, state and national levels including the Brazos River Presbytery, Texas Synod and General Assembly.
Archie attended Peabody High School in Hillsboro and graduated from Clifton High School where he was the first black graduate. After high school, he attended Navarro Junior College and later earned his BA from Tarleton State University.
Archie married his sweetheart, Geneva McLennan on February 14, 1970. To this union two children were born.
He served six years in the United States Air Force where he was stationed in Biloxi, Mississippi. He was later stationed in Okinawa and his last tour was in Las Vegas, Nevada. After his discharge from the Air Force, he enlisted in and ultimately retired from the United States Army National Guard.
Archie worked in the auto body and paint industry and later became an instructor at Texas State Technical College. He was ultimately promoted to TSTC Auto Collision Management Program Chairman. In 2008, Archie received the National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development (NISOD) Excellence Award. NISOD recognizes community and technical college educators not only for what they do for their campuses and students, but for what they do for their community. He retired from TSTC in 2012.
Archie enjoyed yard work at home and at church, watching westerns, and spending time with his grandson. He was preceded in death by his parents: Rev. A.B. and Amanda Watley, sisters Mrs. Delores Fields and Venita Watley.
He leaves to cherish his memory his wife of 47 years, Geneva of McGregor; daughter, Latasha Watley; son, Archie Watley, Jr. and grandson, Chaz Watley all of Austin; three brothers, James, Frederick and Raydell Watley of Clifton; two sisters, Jewell Thorpe of Clifton and Carolyn Watley of Hewitt; two aunts Ida Mae (Willie) Graves and Christine Dent of Houston; a host of nephews, nieces, great nephews, great nieces, relatives and friends.
